A flash flood caused by a storm at the head of a canyon in the Bookcliffs in August 28, 1939. According to eyewitness Merle Winters, the head of the flood ran about five feet deep. It killed Laura Turner, the wife of Albert Turner. She was camped with her son Warren Turner, ranch hand Winters, and Winters’ brother in the canyon. The brother of Merle Winters and Warren Turner nearly drowned, but Merle was able to save both of them. Prior to the flood, Winters tried to convince Laura Turner to get to higher ground, but she was scared of lightning and refused. The flood washed out all of the bridges, and the party could not get to town to take Warren Turner to the doctor. The body of Laura Turner was found underwater the next day. She had been caught in driftwood.
