A World War II era Federal program that researched and developed the first nuclear weapons. Areas of Western Colorado, such as Uravan and Grand Junction, were highly involved in the mining and processing of uranium for the project. The Union Mines Development Corporation, a subsidiary of Union Carbide involved in the research and development of uranium, had offices in Grand Junction and mining operations in Uravan. The Manhattan Project resulted in the first atomic bombs, which were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan in 1945.
