Seventh Day Adventist Church (Clifton, Colorado)
According to Clifton resident Edith (Burns) Strain, who had moved to Clifton with her family by 1909, the first church in the area with its own building belonged to the Seventh Day Adventists. The church was built just east of town, and people of other faiths also utilized it.
Seventh Day Adventist Church (Hotchkiss, Colorado)
According to oral history interviewee Helen (Young) Johnson, who grew up in Hotchkiss during the 1910's, the Seventh Day Adventist Church was the third church to be established there (after the Methodist and Baptist churches).
Shale Oil Syndicate
Company founded by Dr. W.A.E. de Beque, William R. Warren, George Newton, D.D. Potter, Bob de Beque, and William Dinkel to locate and patent oil shale claims on the Western Slope. Oral history interviewee Armand de Beque recalled the painstaking process his father went through to survey and file claims, only to find out that they had overlapped with somebody else’s claims, requiring him to start over. After filing the claims, they were required to meet annual assessment requirements to keep the claim. After completing assessment work, government inspectors told them that the work was improperly done and that they would need to start over. W.A.E. de Beque made several trips to Washington D.C. to seek help from Senator Lawrence C. Phipps and Congressman Ed Taylor, but never got too far. Armand de Beque often joked that S.O.S. was an appropriate abbreviation for the troubled company.
Shamrock Mall (Cinderella City)
The mall featured four sections: Rose Mall, Gold Mall, Shamrock Mall and Cinder Alley. The Shamrock Mall and Cinder Alley, the basement corridors, were not linked. To go from one mall to the other, one had to go up to the fountain area (Blue Mall/Center Court) to cross over. While inconvenient on the one hand, it allowed for an automobile underpass, thus allowing Cinderella City patrons to search for parking spaces without having to drive around the mall's massive exterior.
Shaun Ray (Band)
Shaun Ray is a one-man band with guest members from Grand Junction, CO. Shaun Ray left Alabama for the army; he left the army to study in the city; he left the city for the desert and the Colorado River. He builds his songs out of juniper, red dirt, heartbreak, and whatever they put in the water in Muscle Shoals. He sings like Aretha Franklin was a 3rd Avett Brother. Sheep Mountain Alliance
SMA began in 1988 when a group of concerned citizens halted a logging project just below timberline on the slopes of majestic Sheep Mountain, south of Telluride at Lizard Head Pass. Empowered by the effectiveness of their grassroots efforts and inspired by the environmental protection work needed in our fast-growing region, these activists formed SMA. Since that time, SMA has worked collaboratively with individuals, organizations, local landowners, and public land managers on public lands issues, private land conservation, and wildlife habitat protection. SMA partners with regional and national groups including the Southern Rockies Conservation Alliance, The Wilderness Society, Telluride Mountain Club, and the San Miguel Watershed Coalition.
