Clifton Fire Protection District (Clifton, Colorado)
The Clifton Fire Department was founded on February 18, 1942. After a house fire that killed a local woman, the fledgling Clifton Lions Club arranged for the creation of a fire department through a community campaign. This campaign resulted in the donation of $950 and a 1934 Chevrolet school bus from the Clifton School District 43, which they converted into a fire engine. They stored the fire engine and met in a school building for a season. They then moved into a building, on Clifton’s Main Street, which they purchased from Jack Brewer for $500. They stayed in this building for several years. After the need for a warmer place to keep the fire engine came to light (when the motor in the fire engine froze and split and they were unable to respond to a fire), a building at 3256½ F Rd., Clifton, Colorado was purchased. On July 9, 1943, the fire department became the Clifton Fire Protection District after the passage of a state law recognizing fire districts across the state. This organization oversaw, among other things, the operation of the Clifton Fire Department. Around 1980, the Department constructed and moved into a new building at 3254 F Rd, where it still resides. At that time, the department held meetings on the second Tuesday of every month (save for August, when there was no monthly meeting – on account of that being harvest time). Minor monetary-compensation was introduced to the department after a period of some years where service was entirely voluntary. *Above photo courtesy of the Clifton Fire Protection District.
