Gordon Stores (United States)
A department store founded in Trinidad, CO in 1916 by Ben Gordon and run by members of the Gordon family. Another store was opened by Gilbert Gordon in Durango, CO [1925-1936] and was run by Rudy and Fannie (Gordon) Susman for thirteen years. The store was kept supplied by buying trips to St. Louis, Chicago, and New York (a three day and two night train ride away). At its peak, the chain consisted of eight stores scattered throughout Western Colorado (including Trinidad, Durango, Alamosa, Monte Vista, Del Norte, Montrose, Leadville, and Center), and many others in the West. Gilbert Gordon also opened the Grand Junction branch in 1931. The Susmans purchased the Grand Junction branch from the chain and operated it as a partnership.
