Holly Sugar Company (Colorado)

A sugar company begun in Holly, Colorado in 1905. It processed sugar beets in order to extract sugar, and operated a sugar beet processing unit in Grand Junction, Colorado, which it took over from the Western Sugar and Land Company in 1916. They eventually moved their processing operations to Delta, in 1933.
During the 1960's the company employed many Navajo people as migrant workers, and would send buses to Arizona for their transportation to migrant housing in Fruita.
Carl Swanson and other Loma residents also recall that the company owned housing and operations in Loma, including a horse barn, granary, root cellar and pond.

Home Demonstration Club

Home Demonstration Clubs, often referred to as "H.D. Clubs," were part of U.S. Department of Agriculture Extension Offices and often organized by women in their communities. Womens' Home Demonstration Clubs served an educational and social purpose for women to learn home improvement, household equipment training and purchases, and general education and community building. H.D. Clubs were known to hold fundraisers, educational seminars and sessions, and various community gatherings.

Home Loan and Investment Company (Grand Junction, Colorado)

Company based in Grand Junction, Colorado. Howard McMullin's father was the president of the company. Howard McMullin began on the Board of Directors, served as Vice President, and later became the President. His friend R.E. Daniels was an accountant who through his faithfulness to the company and good work helped ensure its success.

A New Deal organization created by the U.S. Government during the Depression. It refinanced mortgages that were in default so as to prevent foreclosure.

Hotchkiss Community United Methodist Church (Hotchkiss, Colorado)

It was established originally as a Methodist Episcopal Church, with its founding in 1893. With the construction of a new church in 1898, it became the Andrew L. Webb Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church. According to oral history interviewee Helen Lucile Johnson, it was one of only two churches in town in the early 1910’s (her family attended both the Methodist and Baptist Churches). The church’s current building was constructed in 1929.

Hotchkiss Public Library (Hotchkiss, Colorado)

According to oral history interviewee Helen Johnson’s recollection, the Hotchkiss Public Library was housed in one upstairs room with a very small selection of books in the early Twentieth century. It was open only in the afternoons and library cards had to be purchased on a subscription basis.
Today, the Hotchkiss Library is part of the Delta County Libraries system.
