Wisemen's Club (Grand Junction, Colorado)
According to former member and president Robert Gustafson, it was an organization established in 1935 by Bill Campbell of the Independent Lumber Company. Campbell was the first president. It was originally called the Y’s Men’s Club, and was associated with the YMCA. They put on different activities, such as prize fights between CCC camp workers, a Halloween party, picnics, dinner dances, a kite flying contest, a bicycle parade, bicycle inspection, and football games. They gave money to charities, including a milk fund for school children and a bicycle project. They also participated as leaders at a YMCA camp facility on the Grand Mesa and provided maintenance for the camp. The organization met on Thursday nights in the basement of the YMCA and later on the second floor. The establishment of a local Kiwanis Club in 1937, coupled with the onset of World War II (when several members joined the military), made it necessary to disband the club (though for awhile, several people were members of both Kiwanis and the Wisemen’s). Wisemen’s Club members included: Bill Campbell, Rudy Abrecht, Floyd Anderson, Ed Billings, Roy Burgess, Bill Nelson, Gene Mulford, Jack Cagel, Jim Colliton, Bob Edwards, Lowell Long, Ed Meders, Roger Nash, Connie Nolan, Wallace Orr, Eddie Roland, Luther Thomas, B.U.
