430 F Street
Real estate appraisal card. 430 F Street, lot 9 & W. 20' off 8 + 1/2 of 10, block 60, Haskell's Addition, in Salida, Colorado. Although the Chaffee County Assessor reports a construction date of 1900 for this house, documentary evidence indicates it was built between 1882 and 1898. It does not seem to be on the 1882 Bird's-Eye-View Map of Salida, but it is shown on the 1898 Sanborn map. In 1903-04 William H. McCabe, an engineer, lived here. McCabe was listed on F Street in the 1900 U.S. Census, likely at this house. James W. McCabe lived here in 1905-06, together with a boarder, Ira. O. Harold. Mr. Harold worked as a chief clerk at the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad. The McCabes weren't listed in the 1911-12 or 1913-14 city directories of Salida. James McCabe is listed as the owner of this house in the 1920 Census. Born in Canada, Mr. McCabe came to the U.S. in 1880 and worked as a locomotive engineer for the steam railroad. He lived here with his wife Janis M., age 49; his son Paul, age 16; and his daughter Leatis Dillingham, age 18. By 1927-28, Ernest W. and Winifred Cree lived here. Jack V. and Leota Cree, students, also lived here. Mr. Cree was a switchman with the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad and lived in Salida for 18 years. He was a member of Sangre de Cristo Lodge No.31. Mr. Cree passed away in January 1941, after being in failing health for a few years prior to his death. Mrs. Cree moved to Denver after her husband's death and passed away a few years later, on 25 May 1945. Clem A. and Mae C. Newton were listed living here by 1930-31, during which time Mr. Newton was a stone polisher at the Salida Granite Corporation. Mr. Newton, age 43, was born in Indiana. He estimated that the house was worth $5,000 according to the 1930 Census. Mae, age 33, was born in Colorado. The Newtons had a son, Billie, age 3, living with them. Nellie Wilson, Mae Newton's sister, was also living with them in 1930. Mrs. Wilson (43), born in Colorado, was a widow, working as a practical nurse at the hospital. The Newtons still lived here during 1935-36. The 1951 City Directory did not list 430 F St. Homer U. and Edna Willis lived here in 1965. Mr. Willis was an office manager at Public Service Co. 431 E. 1st Street
Real estate appraisal card. 431 E. 1st Street, lots 4-5, block 25, in Salida, Colorado. This house was built in 1904. In 1905-06, the city directory listed the Hamm family at this address. Mrs. Elizabeth W "Binnie" Hamm (b.1845), a widow from Kentucky, lived here with her daughters Elsie E., Margaret M., and Annie R. Hamm. Annie was a cashier at the Golden Rule department store in 1906. The Hamms were still living here in 1910, although Elsie E. had moved out. In 1910, Annie was a bookkeeper for a department store and Margaret was a private nurse. Elizabeth's occupation was listed as "own income." Annie (b.1885) and Margaret (b.1861) were both born in Kansas. By 1920, only Margaret, then 57 years old, was still living with her 75-year-old mother Elizabeth, although at a different address. Margaret, who was still working as a nurse, was listed as the head of household. In 1911-12, the Honan family lived here. Michael J. Honan (b.1866), the head of household, immigrated to the United States from Ireland in 1886. He was the owner of Stanley and Honan. His wife Emma (b.1864) was from Indiana. This was the second marriage for both Michael and Emma, and they had only been married since 1910. Michael's first wife, Margaret, who he was married to until at least 1900, was from Ireland as he was. Several of Michael's children from his first marriage lived here with him: Stephen T. Honan, employed as a laborer; Edna Honan, a student; and Thomas and Mary. Esther J. and Harry Bergman, a sister and brother, lived here in 1922. They were both born in Colorado, although their parents were born in Russia and were of Jewish ancestry. Harry (b.1899) worked as a chainman for Denver & Rio Grande Railroad. By 1930, he was a boarder at 307 E. 1st St. Esther was born June 2, 1896 in Leadville, Colorado. She lived in Salida for many years before moving to New York and California. She died in July 1976, in Grand Junction, Colorado, after living there for fifteen years. By 1930, Clarence P. and Florence J. Watson lived here. Mr. Watson (b.1900) worked as a brakeman for the railroad. Florence was born in 1904 in Montana. The Watsons had one son, Warren E. Also living with them was Clarence's father, John Watson, who had immigrated to the U.S. from Scotland in 1879. John (b.1867) worked as a yardman for the railroad. Henry H. (b.1887) and Pearl P. (b.1888) Kincaid lived here in 1951. Mr. Kincaid started as a brakeman but worked his way up to becoming an engineer for D&RGW. The Kincaids, both of whom were born ln Colorado, had a son, Lewis J. who no longer lived with them by 1951. In 1965 this was the residence of Arthur J. and Frankie R. Waldero. Mr. Waldero was a brakeman with the railroad. The couple had one child. Henry H. and Pearl P. Kinkaid were later owners of this house. 433 E. 1st Street
Real estate appraisal card. 433 E. 1st Street, lots 1-3, block 25, in Salida, Colorado. This building was erected between 1895 and 1902. The 1903-04 city directory indicated that this was a boarding house operated by Maggie Pennington. Mrs. Pennington (b.1863) continued to run the boarding house until at least 1911-12. Harry L. Pennington, a student, and Charles Symes, a machinist for Denver & Rio Grande lived here in 1903. In 1906, the following people boarded here: Paul Moore, a helper; Harry Pennington, a laborer; Roy L. Rickman, an oiler for D&RG; and Charles Edgar Williamson (1861-1920), a helper for D&RG. In 1911-12, the only other person listed here besides Mrs. Pennington was Harry Pennington, now employed as a timekeeper. Robert M. and Cora E. Davidson lived here by 1931. By this point, Cora Davidson was renting furnished rooms here. There was no occupation listed for Robert Davidson (b.1862), who was born in Illinois. Cora was born in Kansas in 1874. The Davidsons had four children: George M., John A., Mildred, and Doris E. In 1920, the family had lived in Nathrop, Colorado, where they ran a general farm. In 1951, David J. and E. Fern Williams lived here. Mr. Williams was employed with the U.S. Army. Viola M. Peterson also lived here, working as a nurse at the railroad hospital. Occupant Irene Jackson, an x-ray technician, also worked at D&RGW Hospital. Kedric F. Smith, a carman for D&RGW also lived here, with his wife Doreen. Also living here was G.A. Connell, who was retired, and his wife Jessie. In 1965, this building was owned by Donald R. and Barbara J. Bess and was known as the Atwood Apartments. Five persons were listed as residents of the apartment building, as well as Mr. and Mrs. Bess and their four children. 437 E. 2nd Street
Real estate appraisal card. 437 E. 2nd Street, lots 3-4, block 28, in Salida, Colorado. This house was built between 1888 and 1895. The 1903-4 city directory listed Mrs. Elizabeth Bly living here with her daughter, Jeanette M. Bly, who worked as a clerk for the Salida Record, and her son Theron. Mrs. Bly may have been the original owner of the house. Robert C. Hall was a roomer here in 1903-04 and worked as a printer at the Salida Mail. Elizabeth Bly was born in New York in 1857; both of her parents were from Scotland. She moved to Salida in 1884 from Bennington, Vermont. By 1905-06, Elizabeth Bly had married prominent Salida citizen Oscar Ludwig "Lud" Johnson, and he moved into this house from his house next door at 444 E. 2nd Street. This was Elizabeth's second marriage. Oscar Johnson was born in 1855 in Sweden, and came to this country in 1882. He was a naturalized citizen by 1910. He was a highly skilled machinist for the railroad for many years after arriving in Salida. He then became an owner of Churcher & Johnson, a furniture store he operated with Frank B. Churcher. When Mr. Churcher died in 1918, Oscar retired. Elizabeth Bly Johnson died in the house in 1941. The newspaper noted that she had lived here for over fifty years. She had been very active in the Tuesday Evening Club and the Rebekah lodge. Oscar Johnson conducted an extended eastern tour following his wife's death and then decided to live at the Odd Fellows Home in Canon City, beginning in 1941. He passed away in Canon City in 1945 at the age of 90. By 1951, Leonard Lawrence and Hazel Konzen occupied this home. Leonard (b.1880) worked as the manager of the Elks Club from 1948 until 1958, the year that he retired. He had been an Elks member since 1903. He was born in 1880 in Napoleon, Ohio. Hazel was born in 1887 in Scuylar, Nebraska, but came to Salida at an early age with her parents, John and Minnie Woods. During her life she was affiliated with several social clubs. The Konzens lived in this house through at least 1965. Mrs. Konzen died in November 1971 in a Canon City nursing home. Mr. Konzen died at Columbine Manor in February 1978.
