The 1899 year of construction currently reported by the Assessor is not correct, nor is the 1888 year built noted on the old Assessor appraisal card. The house was built between 1888 and 1895, based on photographs taken of Salida from Tenderfoot Hill. The house is depicted as a one-story, generally rectangular dwelling with a narrower rear section, a small projection on the east wall, and full-width open porches on the front and rear on the 1904 Sanborn fire insurance map (the first edition to cover this area). The footprint of the house on 1904 through 1945 Sanborn maps does not change. The old appraisal card and attached 1937 photograph indicates that the house was brick on a stone foundation with wood shingle roofing and an "iron picket fence on the side." In 1904, the rear of the property on the alley was filled with three outbuildings: a center stable flanked by two smaller buildings. Between 1914 and 1929, the stable and east outbuilding were removed and a one-story garage was erected facing B Street; the west shed appears to have been retained and extended somewhat to the east.
