Real estate appraisal card. 224 D Street, lots 6-7, block 30, in Salida, Colorado. This house was erected in 1900 according to the Chaffee County Assessor. Charles "Charlie" B. Chapman, a carpenter, lived at this house in 1903-04. Gharles was born in Missouri in 1865. The 1900 US Census showed Chapman living with his wife, Octavia J., who was born in 1869 in Missouri. The Salida address was not given in that year. Clay Davidson was a roomer with the Chapmans in 1903-04. James W. Woods, a conductor, was living in this house by 1906. By 1910 he was married to Bessie Woods (b.1873), and the couple was living with his parents, George and Minerva, at a different house in Salida. James was born in Ohio in 1858. His parents were also from Ohio. James and Bessie had three children by 1910: Joseph (b.1893), Gladys (b.1896), and Edith (b.1901). In 1911-12, Mrs. Letha A. Mahar, widow of Frank S. Mahar, lived here and owned the Salida Transfer & Storage Company. She continued to live here until at least 1922, at which point she was the owner of the M&H Store. Letha was born in Missouri in 1874. She was already widowed by 1910 and living at a different house on D Street. The 1910 Census lists two daughters and a son living with her: M. Elizabeth (b.1903), Francis R. (b.1907) and Carl S. (b.1909). The 1922 city directory still listed Mrs. Mahar; at that time she was a widow and she was affiliated with the M&H Store. The property was vacant in 1931. Leonard and Mary Abbott owned the residence in 1951, during which time Leonard worked for D&RGW. Both of the Abbotts were from Italy. Mary was born in 1900 and Leonard in 1892. Leonard came to the U.S. in 1910 and Mary in 1921. They were married in 1922. They had two children by 1930: Liondina (b.1925) and Leguigo (b.1924). In 1930, Leonard was working as a laborer for a lime quarry. In 1965, this was still the residence of Leonard and Mary Abbott. Mr. Abbott then worked at odd jobs. Real estate appraisal card. 225 D Street, lots 14-17, block 29, in Salida, Colorado. This house was built in 1885, according to Chaffee County Assessor records. William M. Henderson and Nettie Henderson lived at this address in 1903. William was a repairman for D&RG. Andrew Tubbs, a laborer, lived here by 1906. He married Anna in 1894. Andrew was born in Pennsylvania in 1863 and Anna was born in New York in 1869. By 1910 Andrew was working as a carpenter. In 1910, Martis W. Weldon, a fireman for D&RG, occupied the home. He was born in Alabama in 1875. Also living here was his Canadian-French wife, Maggie (b.1880) and their children: Pearl M. (b.1902), Doris H. (b.1905), and Marty D. (b.1909). The Weldons lived at a different address in Salida by 1920. Harry E. and Flora Austin lived at the house in 1922. Harry was an auto operator. In 1931 Arthur M. and Lou Fletcher resided at this address. Arthur, a carpenter, was born in Illinois in 1865 and Lou was born in 1867 in Ohio. Lou's parents were both from Germany, while Arthur's parents were from Scotland and England. By 1951, Jerry Entihar, who was retired, lived here. He died in July 1957, when he was described as a "long time resident." Also, in 1951 Joseph F. Drobnick lived here with his wife Staffie, who was a bookkeeper at Argys Brothers Garage. Joseph worked at the Monarch Quarry as an electric helper. The 1965 city directory indicated that this was the residence of Joseph F. and Staffie Drobnick, who owned the house, and Mrs. Grace Murnane. 232 D Street
Real estate appraisal card. 232 D Street, lot 8, block 30, in Salida, Colorado. This house was built in 1902 according to Chaffee County Assessor records. William Burless, a clerk at J.M. King lived here in 1903. In 1906, William M. Frye lived at this house. He was a manager for the Van Noy RR News Co at the D&RG Depot. The 1920 US Census indicated that this was the residence of Treffle and Hazel Beauregard. Mr. Beauregard was a salesman at a grocery store. He was born in Kansas and Mrs. Beauregard was born in Colorado. The 1910 US Census indicated that Henry L. Hines lived here with his wife Martha and daughter Mary. Mr. Hines was born in Missouri about 1871 and worked as a machinist with the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad. Mrs. Hines was born in the same year in Pennsylvania. Mrs. Ellen Roberts, the widow of Moses J. Roberts, lived here in 1922. Also living here in 1922 were William H. and Viola M. Thompson. William was a popular engineer on the Second Division of the Rio Grande. William was born in 1884 in Bonanza, where his father, Henry Thompson, made and lost two fortunes in mining. The family moved to Georgetown and then Leadville, where William spent his formative years. There he began working for the Denver & Rio Grande. He married Viola Roberts of Leadville in Glenwood Springs in 1908. The couple lived in Minturn for a few years before moving to Salida in 1921. While in Minturn, William was president of the school board and a master of the Masonic Lodge. The Thompsons had two children: Marvin and Wilma. William died in 1945 at the age of 63 after being stung by a yellowjacket while hunting. He was described as "widely known among railroad men and popular." Viola was born in 1888 and died in Denver in 1972. Both of her children preceded her in death. In 1931, Luvertia W. and Kathy Heister lived at this house. Luvertia was a cement contractor. In 1951, T.H. and Zetta M. Hazelhurst lived at this address. Mr. Hazelhurst was a machinist with D&RGW. The two married in April 1930 in Salida. They had two children: Gary and Donna. Zetta (b.1913) died at the age of 66, in 1979. The 1965 city directory indicated that the Hazelhursts still lived here. Mr. Hazelhurst was then a truck driver for the City Street Department. Real estate appraisal card. 236 D Street, lots 9-10, block 30, in Salida, Colorado. This house was built before 1886, based on the Sanborn Map of that date. Members of the Furniss family were living here in 1903-04 and still owned the house in 1922. In 1903, William and Margurite Furniss lived here with their children: Thomas, John E., William, George F., and Clarence. Daughter Margaret joined the family in 1905. William was born in Ireland in 1855, and immigrated to the U.S. in 1870. In 1910 he was working as a clerk for the railroad. Margurite "Maggie" was born in Illinois in 1861, but both of her parents were from Ireland. In 1910, John E. was working as a clerk for a clothing store and William Jr. was working as a switchman with the railroad. Thomas was a caller with D&RG. Sarah Knebel also lived here with the family in 1903, working as a dressmaker. By 1906 Thomas was a helper with D&RG. William Jr. was a general laborer. In 1911-12, George was a clerk at Clana Moxom. Thomas was a salesman with Disman Clothing Company. By 1920 William was retired. Thomas and George were both machinists working for the railroad. Clarence was a bookkeeper for the yard office at the railroad. Margaret was a student. William died in May 1921. Margurite continued living here as did Margaret, George, Clarence, and Thomas. They are listed in the 1922-23 city directory at this address. The Furniss family no longer resided at this home by 1930. Harry West, a baker, and his wife, Gladys H., lived here in 1930. Harry was born in Tennessee in 1895 and Gladys in Missouri in 1895. The Wests were also listed at this address in the 1930-31 city directory. In 1951 Henry G. Otto, who was retired, lived here. Grant Alexander, who was retired, and his wife Helena, lived here as well. The 1965 city directory listed Charles C. and Edna B. Dalpaiz at this address, along with their two children. Mr. Dalpiaz was a crusher at Climax Molybdenum. Grant and Helena C. Alexander were later owners of this house. Real estate appraisal card. 247 D Street, lots 14-17, block 29, in Salida, Colorado. This house was built between 1890 and 1892. In 1903, Harry Hansen Adams and his wife Mary lived at this address. Harry Adams was born in Pennsylvania in 1862, and Mary Tring Adams was born in Iowa in 1864. They were married in 1900. Mr. Adams worked as a boilermaker for Denver & Rio Grande Railroad until at least 1927. He was working as a clerk for E.O. Churchill Cigars in 1937. In 1903 their children, Mabel Adams and Caleb H. Adams, an apprentice for D&RG, also lived at this house. The 1905-06 city directory listed Henry B. Adams, a helper with the Denver & Rio Grande, as a boarder at this address. The Anderson family also lived here as boarders in 1906. Leonard Anderson, a machinist with D&RG, and his wife Jenne M. lived here, as well as two of their children: George Jay Anderson (b.1885), an apprentice for D&RG, and Grace D. Anderson (b.1888), a high school student. They had one other child, Janet C. (b.1893). Leonard and Jenne were both born in England, Leonard in 1850 and Jenne in 1851. Jenne came to the U.S. in 1857 and Leonard came to the U.S. in 1879. Ray Adams (b.1897) and his wife Carrie (b.1898) and their son, Ray E., lived with Harry and Mary Adams at a different house in Salida in 1920. Mary Adams died 18 January 1934. Harry Adams died of a heart attack in April 1937, at the age of 75. He had been a resident of Salida for over forty years at that point. Clyde W. Clark (b.1857) lived at this address by 1911-12. He worked as a fireman for D&RG. He died in Central City in March 1932 after a mining accident in which he was caught between a piece of machinery and a truck. Emanuel and Ruth B. Bergman lived at this home by 1922 and until at least 1931. They were married 23 October 1919 in Salida and had four children together. Mr. Bergman was born in Leadville in 1893 and moved to Salida in 1917. His parents were born in Germany. He began working for D&RG in the water service and later became a car repairman. In 1930 Emanuel was working as a foreman pipefitter for the city water service. Emanuel died at the age of 54 in March 1949. By 1951, Anton and Katherine Drobnick owned this house. Anton was retired at this point. Mary Drobnick became a later owner, living here with Anton and Katherine. Mary Drobnick was a saleswoman with Donnohue's Jewelry and Gifts.
