Building Spiral Drive
In the fall of 1921, R.L. Hampson and his fellow Commercial Club members started clearing a road up Tenderfoot Hill in Salida, Colorado. For the next few months, several men would go up Tenderfoot and dig away at the side of the hill building road. By early 1922, the entire town became involved. Railroaders, businessmen, and farmers, all had a hand in building the road up to the top of Tenderfoot Mountain. With additional help from Warden M.P. Capp and the Buena Vista Reformatory inmates, Spiral Drive was open for automobiling by October 1922. This image is from the Bob Pierce Collection.
