One of the original ten teachers at Colorado State Normal School, Maria T. Hennes presided over the Household Economics department. She also designed the hat. Hennes taught cooking and sewing, but more importantly, she wrote, "manual dexterity, close observation, neatness, knowledge of materials, the dignity of labor, and, above all, the attention of women to the greatest of all institutions--the home." Appointed Dean of Women in 1912, Hennes proved to be a stern disciplinarian. [Martin Hatcher notes]

Art Studio, Colorado State Normal School, Normal Hall (Taylor Hall), ca. 1912. Henry L. Richter was the instructor, standing. He painted the mural behind him which was discovered in storage in Quigley Hall and now hangs in the circulation area of the Leslie J. Savage Library. The plaster cast of a Greek boy which these students are sketching was still used by the college in 1949.
