"The whole length of the Canon is 11 miles. The Royal Gorge, the grandest national wonder, is 1 1/2 miles. Its perpendicular walls rise up 2,000 feet, while the curves add the finishing touches to its grandeur, and the roar of the narrow, pent-up Arkansas is re-echoed from the high walls of granite, making a lasting impression on the traveler and admirer, Altitude, 1,000 feet."
