"A Bad Wreck" The Locomotive and Three Freight Cars Plunge Into the River.
About 1 o'clock Monday night, an east bound freight train was wrecked in Eagle Canon near Rock Creek. The engine struck a large rock that had fallen from the perpendicular cliffs over the track. Engineer McCabe saw the obstruction in time to reverse his engine and jump and escaped unhurt. The engine and five box cars loaded with ore from Aspen were derailed, the engine and three of the cars going over the embankment. Fireman J. D. Connors went down with the wreck and was badly hurt. The head brakeman, whose name was not learned, was also quite seriously injured.
