"There is a short growing season but somehow we, mostly grandmother Mom, managed to raise carrots, radishes, green onions and leaf lettuce. There were some rhubarb plants and some of the most atomic horseradish ever known to mankind. There were lots of deer and rabbits and no one, even the Forest Ranger who doubled as Game Warden, paid a whole lot of attention to established hunting seasons. I have often said that we weren't poor, we just didn't have any money." -- T. R. "Bud" Beck, Red Cliff as I Saw It from about 1925 to 1950, p.1
