Joe Allen, president of the First National Bank of Eagle County for 44 years, was born in Glenwood Springs Feb. 21, 1899, the son of Alexander and Leah Allen. He attended school in that city and also attended West Point, U. S. Military Academy prior to the end of World War I.
He began his banking career in Glenwood Springs; worked for a short time in a bank at Red Cliff; then joined the First National Bank at Eagle in 1919, taking over its operation in 1921.
He married Miss Helen Hart of Red Cliff on June 21, 1922, in Denver.
Mrs. Allen was active in nearly every progressive movement in Eagle and the county and was a member of the Eagle Chamber of Commerce, the Masonic Lodge, Order of Eastern Star, the American Legion and the Forty & Eight.
He was past president of the Colorado Bankers' Association, and was currently a member of the governor's board of the Federal Reserve system's Tenth District. --Eagle Valley Enterprise, April 23, 1964, p.1
