Battle Mountain Corporation to Residents of Gilman, Colorado
A letter to residents in the town of Gilman from Craig Nagler, President of Battle Mountain Corporation, as formal notification of their intention to discontinue services to the once-thriving company town. Battle Mountain Corporation offered relocation assistance to residents; the town had been built around jobs in the mine, making relocation more than a move for all involved. The town of Gilman sits perched on a hillside above the Eagle Mine and was a company town for many years with its own school, hospital, post office and zip code, as well as essential services. Workers were provided with a home and all utilities from the mining company creating a close-knit community. Per EPA regulations, the mine was closed and the town of Gilman has sat empty ever since. This letter was donated by Angela Beck, who served as the last postmaster of Gilman, Colorado.
