A directory of subscribers for the Eagle Valley Telephone Company exchange at Eagle, Colorado. The directory is dated May 1, 1927 and includes rates for installation, service, private telephone lines, and business lines. At the time, telephones were large and attached to the wall; customers could often hear other conversations while on the line. A phone number was 3-4 numbers long. All customers-- both residential and business-- are listed together alphabetically.
Phone directories provide information about local businesses, current residents, and the changing locations of these groups. Despite a rural, sparse population at the time, Eagle and Gypsum led the Eagle Valley in providing utilities such as electricity and telephone service to residents.

The directory is dated January 1, 1935 and includes rates for installation, service, private telephone lines, and business lines. Telephones were becoming more modern: by 1935, telephones had a receiver to put to your ear and a stand, much of the same design they would have for the next 50 years. 1935 was also the year of the first telephone call made around the world. Local phone numbers had gained a few digits in some cases, and now required up to 5 numbers to dial. All customers-- both residential and business-- are listed together alphabetically.

Ethel Boies was born and rasied in Red Cliff, Colorado. In 1918, she married Howard G. Bayer, well-known in Minturn and Red Cliff through his involvement with many youth organizations. Ethel's typescript focuses on early days of Red Cliff and the surrounding areas of Eagle and Lake County (Leadville). Many mines, miners, mine benefactors, assay numbers, and mine locations are also mentioned., Many names could not be transcribed accurately from the original document.
