Russell Beck and Poppies
Russell Beck, age 7, showing the poppies he was selling for Armistice/Remembrance/Veterans Day (Nov. 11) in 1939. The red poppy featured in the poem, In Flanders Fields, by Dr. John McCrae. The poppy as a symbol for the bloodshed in World War I was adopted by the National American Legion Conference in 1919 and the American Legion has been selling poppies on Nov. 11 ever since. The photo bears a good example of fingerprint damage on the upper left corner.
