Robert Johnson
Robert came to Lafayette, CO in 1918 and worked as a coal miner. He was married to Stacia Johnson 1916 and they had three children.
Robert Louis Quimby
The former vice-president of First National Bank in Grand Junction, Colorado. He was born in Garden City, Kansas, grew up in Rifle, Colorado and later attended the University of Colorado at Boulder. It would appear that he attended the University of Colorado at Denver and later attended the University of Colorado at Boulder at the same time as his future wife, Lois Jane Southward (who also grew up in Rifle). He married her in 1947. He served in the US Navy after his graduation. US Census records show he and Jane living in Rifle in 1950, with Robert working as a crew leader on the census. He later became a city councilman and a county commissioner. He served as a representative from Garfield County, Colorado and encouraged his wife's political career as Grand Junction’s first female city councilwoman and mayor. *Photograph from 1947 University of Colorado yearbook.
Robert Louis Strain
A farmer, mechanic, and service station owner in Clifton, Colorado. He was born in Kansas and moved to Mesa County with his parents William and Mary Strain in 1898. US Census records show Robert living in Clifton in 1900, when he was 8 years old. His grandparents had moved to Clifton in 1890. According to Roberts' wife, Edith (Burns) Strain, his family lived along the Colorado River in an area known as Tanglewood. He married Edith Burns in 1913. He and Edith lived briefly in Towner before returning to Clifton. They farmed fruit in the Clifton area. In 1921, he invented a spraying device for pesticides. From 1924-1937, he worked at the Ford Garage. He then owned his own Mobile service station, on F Road in Clifton, from 1939-1954. For thirteen years, Edith operated a restaurant next door. He was one of the original members of the planning commission for Mesa County, and worked on the numbering of the county’s streets. He was a member of the Clifton Volunteer Fire Department and the Clifton Lions Club. He was a member and president of the Clifton Water District.
Robert Luther "Bob" Magel
He was born to John E. Magel, a lawyer and business owner, and Catherine Stowers (Durham) Magel, a homemaker. Bob grew up and went to school in Ohio. His father died of a heart attack in 1959, when Bob was in 8th grade. This led to strife between Robert and his mother. He attended Wilmington College in 1964, but intentionally flunked out in 1965, so that he could join the US Navy like his father had. He enlisted in the Navy in March 1966. He joined the Navy in 1966 and served four years, reaching the rank of E-4 Boatswain’s Mate – 3rd Class. He attended basic training in Great Lakes, Illinois. He studied data processing in the Navy, but failed the training course. He had attained a rank of E2 but was demoted to seaman recruit. He served in European waters (Switzerland, Holland, Germany, Sicily, and Italy). He attained the rank of Third Class Boats Mate while in Europe. He disliked Italy and intentionally prolonged his service by six months so that he could be sent to Vietnam. He attended shipboard firefighting school on Treasure Island in San Francisco, then was sent to Vietnamese waters (the Mekong Delta) on the U.S.S. Madera County in 1969, during the Vietnam War. He was stationed onboard the Madera and then the Page County, LSTs (Landing Ship Tank), which were cargo ships used to haul weapons and ammunition. He left the Navy in 1970, after ten months in Vietnam. He married Donna Henderson in Ohio in 1972. They moved to Grand Junction, Colorado that same year. They had three daughters before divorcing in July 1980. He was a member of the Vietnam Veterans of America in Grand Junction when the local chapter was founded in April 1982. He worked as a deliveryman, carpenter, and in sales before starting his own business.
