- She was born in Grand Rapids, Minnesota to Clement W. Obrien and Beth Evelyn (Mertes) Obrien. Her father was a farmer and a mechanic. Her mother was a homemaker. She grew up in Minnesota. She married Harold LeRoy Gardner November 4, 1961. He was a meat cutter and a pastor. They moved together to Loma, Colorado in 1979, when Harold took charge of the Loma Community Church. They stayed in the West for several years, with Harold working for different churches before joining the Friends of Israel Gospel Ministry.
