Susan Etta (Lewis) Carpenter
-
Together with her husband William Thomas Carpenter, she was a pioneering citizen of Grand Junction, mentioned as a resident in the Grand Junction News as early as 1883. She had her own singing school, called the Conservatory of Music. With her husband, she also jointly owned the Mesa County Bank, a coal mine at the town of Carpenter, and the Little Book Cliff Railway.
She founded the First Christian Science Church in Grand Junction. It was called Carpenter Hall, located on North 1st Street. She also created what was known as Carpenter's Pond when she dammed an arroyo that once went through what later became Sherwood Park. The arroyo apparently cut down First Street after leaving Sherwood, went through the intersection of First and North Avenue, and drained into the small ravine that forms the current Lilac Park. That’s where Mrs. Carpenter constructed her dam and made the pond, along with paths and other amenities. She and her husband lived near the intersection of 1st Street and Grand Avenue. They divorced in 1901.
