Tell Ertl
He was the engineer in charge of the mining and development at the Anvil Points Research Facility under the United States Bureau of Mines. He graduated with a B.S. from the University of Washington and worked as a miner before earning an M.S. in mining engineering and a doctorate in philosophy and pure science from Columbia University in 1946. His interest in oil shale grew out of his position as chief of the mining section at the Oil Shale Mine in Rifle, CO, under the Bureau of Mines. Later, he headed Union Oil's oil shale department. He was also a professor of mining and petroleum engineering and department chair at Ohio State University.
