William Harrison "Jack" Dempsey

He was the heavyweight boxing champion of the world from 1919 to 1926, and a cultural icon in the 1920's, when boxing was on par with baseball in popularity. He grew up in Manassa and Montrose, Colorado. According to Mesa County Oral History interviewee Grace Wade, Dempsey worked one summer for her father, Benjamin Felix Hill, in the Moffat Mine.
