Carrie Belle (Griffin) Martin

She was the wife of Fred Martin and helped to run their family business, Martin Mortuary, in Grand Junction, Colorado. She was born in Illinois to Edward Griffin, a farmer from England, and to Maria Griffin, a homemaker. She and Fred moved to Longmont, Colorado shortly after his graduation from mortuary school, in 1913, when she was 31. The move West was made in order to improve her health.
The family moved to Palisade in Mesa County in 1915. There, they had an undertaker business. When members of the family became ill from Typhoid, nurse Elizabeth Reese moved in with the family for 6 weeks and took care of the household chores so that they could recover.
The family moved to Grand Junction in 1917, where they established Martin Mortuary.

Dr. Carrie Besnette Hauser is president and CEO of Colorado Mountain College, a public two- and four-year degree granting institution with eleven learning locations serving 12,000 square miles of the picturesque central Rocky Mountains. Hauser’s career has included leadership and management roles in higher education institutions, private foundations, and the public policy arena. She has been an executive at the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation and Metropolitan State University of Denver. Hauser also served as vice president and an original senior officer of the Daniels Fund.
