Charles Albert "Charley" Rump
He was born and raised in Illinois. His parents were John Henry Rump, an agricultural importer, and Mary A. (Geisel) Rump, a homemaker. Charles's grandparents were all German immigrants. The 1910 US Census shows the family living in Quincy, Illinois when Charlie was 17 years old. He graduated from the University of Illinois at Springfield in 1907, where he was the Student Body President. He married Viola Anna Steinbach in Illinois in 1908. They had two sons, John and William. By 1910, they were living in Denver, Colorado, where the census shows his occupation as civil engineer. According to his son, William, Charles was the prime contractor on the construction of canals, dams, and reservoirs in the Norwood area from 1910 to 1912. The company backing him on the work went broke, and it took him years of work to complete the projects and pay off the debt. The family lived briefly in Louisiana, where Rump spent some time working on land reclamation. They returned to Denver, where he was part of the Denver Suburban Homes company that developed orchard land south of Denver into the Highview Park Orchards residential development in the 1910’s (now part of Greenwood Village). The family moved to the Fisher area of Mesa County in 1919 (now considered part of the Redlands), where they farmed. He was involved in the Redlands Company and the Redlands Water and Power Company, organizations that facilitated the agricultural development of the Redlands. He planted orchards as part of his work for the Redlands Company. He joined the Grand Junction Rotary Club in 1921; he became president of the club in 1923. He coached Grand Junction High School’s ‘second team’ in football during the 1920’s. He became general manager of the Grand River Valley Railway Company by 1929 (the Interurban). This position came with benefits in terms of reduced travel costs on other rail lines throughout the country. He later became the manager of the Public Service Company (which was then called the Grand Junction Light and Power Company), and helped to build their operations in the area. He was on the first board of directors for the Grand Junction Chamber of Commerce. He was a good friend to Walter Walker and Clyde Biggs. *Photograph from the 1907 University of Illinois at Chicago yearbook.
Charles Allen
Charles Allen was mayor of Englewood from 1948 to 1951.
Charles Arthur “Pretty Boy” Floyd
A famous American bank robber. According to retired Grand Junction Police Department officer Fritz Becker, Floyd spent an entire winter in Delta, Colorado, on 2nd and Dodge Streets. He took a train from Delta to Grand Junction on Fridays and stayed for the weekend at the Grand Hotel. There he played pool with local aficionados at a saloon, then returned to Delta at the end of the weekend. No one recognized him until after he left Western Colorado and was captured. Then, when his photo was in the newspaper, local law enforcement and others were able to identify the pool player they had played with all winter as Pretty Boy Floyd.
