: Charles Harold Buttolph; He was born in Michigan and received a BS Degree from Michigan Agricultural College (now Michigan State University) in 1918. He spent the years of 1913-14 running cattle on the Grand Mesa with Clarence Nichols, then returned to Michigan for school. After graduation, he briefly joined the army during World War One, but contracted Tuberculosis and was released. Due to health reasons, doctors advised him to move to a drier climate. He took the train across the country from Pontiac with his wife in 1919 to move to Mesa County, Colorado. He then began working at Cross Orchards, caring for pear trees, and eventually bought adjacent farm land. He later taught science courses at Fruitvale High School. He was involved in the founding of the Hoel Business College (which later became the Ross Business College). He belonged to the Presbyterian Church, the Lions Club, and the Masons.
