Charlie Macnamara
He was a locomotive engineer on the Uintah Railway. He was based in Grand Junction, Colorado. He was also a carpenter. Oral history interviewee Harold Stafford called him “The craziest man I ever seen.” Born 1895.
Charlie McCormack
According to oral history interviewee Bill Bowen, who oversaw some area grazing operations, McCormack was an admitted horse thief who would steal horses in Arizona and sell them in Colorado, and then steal horses in Colorado and sell them in Arizona in the early Twentieth century.
Charlie Moynihan
Prosecuting attorney in Durango, Colorado in the early Twentieth century. According to John Duncan Hart, Moynihan would cut up onion and rub it on his handkerchief, so that when he held the handkerchief to his face during a trial, his eyes would water. Moynihan represented locally high-profile clients, including Johnny “Kid” West. He was also a skilled orator.
Charlie Penwill
Charles “Charlie” Penwill was born 26 February 1945 in Washington, D.C. to Charles Henry Penwill and Marjorie Betts. He grew up in Bath, United Kingdom (UK) and enjoyed dual citizenship. Penwill was educated at City of Bath Boys and graduated in 1966 from St. Luke’s – University of Exeter, located in Exeter UK. He attended Washington State University in Vancouver, Washington and earned his M.S. at the University of Illinois. In 1971, Charlie Penwill arrived in Vail. He served as Director of the Vail Recreational District between 1972 and 1979. Subsequently, Penwill served as Vice-President of Sales and Marketing for Vail Associates (later Vail Resorts) for over four decades. Penwill was active in rugby and soccer throughout his youth and adult life. He has served as President of the 10th Mountain Trail Association Board of Directors. Charlie Penwill and Patti Penwill are the parents of Alex Penwill and Nicole Penwill-Gregg, M.D.
Charlie Steen
He was a uranium prospector in Western Colorado and Eastern Utah. He founded the Mi Vida uranium mine, southeast of Moab, Utah, from which he gained and then lost a fortune.
Charlie Thomas
A member of the Ku Klux Klan who roughed up Walter Walker during an incident in the street for the things he was writing in the Sentinel.
