Darwin Burford
Darwin was born in Whitewater, Colorado June 4th, 1898. His grandparents came out to the Whitewater area in 1888 and homesteaded in the area. As a child, he attended the community church in Whitewater, where any people of faith could worship. He attended Christmas and other community events there. In fact, he and his friend were the church janitors. Also as a child, he helped his father on their sheep and cattle ranching operation in Whitewater and Pinon Mesa. Later, he became a sheep rancher in his own right.
Darwin Pearl Kingsley
He came to Grand Junction in 1882 or 1883. Despite being young, jobless, and broke, Edwin Price offered him a job with his newspaper, the Grand Junction News. Quickly, Kingsley became the newspaper's editor. He married Mary Kingsley, daughter of the president of the New York Life Insurance Company. His father-in-law offered him a position at the New York Life Insurance Company, and he later became president of New York Life, a position he held from 1906-1930. During his tenure, the company's business greatly expanded. He was also a partner of Dr. W.A.E. De Beque in the cattle business.
