-
David Garton, Jr. was born 29 April 1941 to David Sr. and Virginia Vollrath Garton in the community of Sheboygan, Sheboygan County, Wisconsin. He was the eldest of six. Tim Garton, his brother and another long-time local, was the second eldest. Dave Garton graduated from Sheboygan Central High School in 1959 and lettered in football, basketball and track. Sheboygan is located on the western shore of Lake Michigan; thus, Garton learned to love water early on. He graduated from Amherst College and earned his MBA at Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern in Evanston, Illinois. Garton was first in his class at Northwestern University. He worked for E. and J. Gallo Winery prior to his arrival in Vail.
At the behest of his good friend from high school, Paul Testwuide, Dave Garton, Tim Garton, and cousin Rob Garton, all arrived in Vail in the 1960s. Dave Garton’s first jobs were with Vail Associates as a ski instructor and member of the ski patrol. He also worked in mountain operations and snow-making. In the early days of Vail, Garton partnered in the Cornuti Bar and owned Garton’s Saloon. Garton has also been involved in real estate development throughout Eagle County for many years.
The Gartons are well-known for their excellent sense of humor. Dave Garton famously participated in many elaborate and creative antics with Packy Walker, Charlie McLaughlin, Paul Testwuide and others. Dave Garton married Sara Bartholomew in Sheboygan, Wisconsin where children Bart and Samantha were born. Later, Garton married Sande Holst; daughter Ashley was born to that union. The Gartons currently make their home in Buckhorn Valley near Gypsum, Colorado.

He also used Mormon Tea to brew a kind of tea. Burg describes Knight as tall and dark with black hair. He probably came to Mesa County sometime around 1913, when he was riding in the Piceance Basin as a representative for a large ranching operation called the Lane Company.
