Don Oberto

Don Oberto was born at the hospital (now museum) in Telluride, CO. in 1944.
Don is the youngest child of Silvio and Tynne Oberto and attended Telluride schools graduating from Telluride High School in 1961. Don attended Western State College (now University) in Gunnison, CO majoring in math and science. He received his BA from Western in 1965 and his MA in 1966.
Following college Don was employed by Calgon Corp. in industrial sales in Pittsburgh and Detroit. In 1967 Don accepted a position with IBM in Boulder, CO as a computer analyst. Don entered the US Army in August of 1969 and after basic training Don was assigned to the Pentagon in Washington D.C. as a computer analyst. Don was honorably discharged from the Army August of 1971 with a rank of SP-5. He returned to his prior position at IBM Boulder and later transferred to the IBM sales office in Denver to work in software development for IBM business clients.
While working at the Pentagon, Don met Marcy Ponder who was also employed at the Pentagon and she would become his future wife. Don and Marcy were married in September of 1972 in Denver. After the passing of Don’s parents (Silvio in 1974 and Tynne in 1976), Don accepted a computer analyst position with Colorado-Ute Electric Assn in Montrose, CO and he & Marcy moved to Montrose.
While living in Montrose, Don also began his involvement with the San Miguel Basin State Bank in Norwood, CO as an investor and Board of Director Member. In 1979 Don accepted a VP position with the bank and they moved to Norwood. In 1981, Don returned to Colorado-Ute as a manager in the computer division and moved back to Montrose while also retaining his Director position with the bank.
In 1981, a son, Brad, was born to Marcy and Don. Brad and wife, Rebecca, live in Montrose where Brad is employed in the banking industry.
In 1989, Don left Colorado-Ute and acquired his Real Estate Broker’s License. He practiced real estate in Telluride and Montrose. In 1991, Don joined the ownership group that owned the Bank of Telluride and the San Miguel Basin State Bank in Norwood and opened and managed the Western Colorado Bank in Montrose for the group. He managed the Montrose and Norwood banks plus served on the Board of Directors for the Telluride, Montrose and Norwood Banks. These banks merged with the Weststar banks in 1998 and Don continued to work with the merged entity as a Regional President of the branches in Telluride, Montrose, Norwood, Delta, Cedaredge and Grand Junction. Don left the banking group in 2001 to form a real estate brokerage in Montrose. Don retired from real estate in 2017 and continues to reside in Montrose. He likes to say that he has had three careers (computer, banking and real estate) and is in search of his fourth which has become genealogy and family research.
