Louisa Madden
A Sister of Charity. She left Leavenworth, Kansas for Grand Junction, Colorado in July 1895 to establish St. Mary’s Hospital. She was the primary person responsible for fundraising for the project. She traveled all through Grand Junction and the surrounding counties asking for donations for the hospital. She visited mining camps in Ouray, Telluride and elsewhere. At times she stayed with Catholic families. Other times she stayed in a tent and was given food and money by miners.
Louise Amelia "Lou" (Sieber) Sleeper
Elocution teacher at the Sleeper School, a private school in Glade Park that she founded with George Gordon. Mother of Catherine (Saxon) Moore. Wife of John Frank Sleeper. She was an early pioneer in Glade Park and with her husband, part of a prominent ranching family. According to Dorothy (Gordon) Mahoney, telephone service was brought to Glade Park thanks to the efforts of Louise Sleeper and rancher George Washington Gordon.
