Mildred Carriere
"Mildred “Midge” Carriere died peacefully at her home in Norwood, Colo., on Oct. 19, 2011, at the age of 99, with her family by her side. Midge was born on April 27, 1912, in Lake View, Colo., to Thomas and Candace Irving. Midge spent her childhood in Lake View and Pandora; her married years in Rico, Pandora and Telluride; and moved to Norwood in 1980. Midge married Wilbert “Bud” Carriere on June 10, 1929. They were blessed with five wonderful children, Wilbert “Bud” Carriere of Cortez, Colo. Robert “Moe” Carriere of Norwood, Colo., Tom Carriere (Margot Bradley) of Denver, Colo., Ron Carriere of Denver, Colo., and Charlotte Royer (Johnny Royer) of Norwood, Colo. Midge was a life member of the Telluride Rebekah Lodge and a member of the Norwood Southern Baptist Church. Midge proudly served as Telluride’s town clerk for 22 years. Midge enjoyed fishing from the bank and from the boat, crocheting, sewing, needle work, canning, making wreaths, baking, bowling, watching her kids and grandkids play sports, and challenging anyone to a good game of cribbage. She is survived by her brother Theron Irving, of Napa, Calif.; her sons and daughter; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces. Mildred Mae (Smith) Downey
She was born in Vernal, Utah to William E. “Ben” Smith and Jessie Smith, both originally from Colorado. Her father was a teamster and a mechanic with his own garage. Her mother was a homemaker. The 1920 US Census shows the family living in Riverton, Wyoming, when Mildred was 9. By 1930 the family had moved to Loma, Colorado. Mildred married Wilbur Eugene Downey in 1929. She was a housewife. During the 1960’s, she helped Wilbur run the Loma Store, a general store they owned in Loma. According to Leola Wiswell, Mildred would meet the train coming into town each day and transport the mail to the post office.
