Myra Marie (Covey) Treece
Marie Treece was an early Mesa County, Colorado resident who was heavily involved with teaching music and directing chorus arrangements. She was born in Baxter Springs, Kansas to Edgar Covey, a drayman, and Nora Covey, a homemaker. The 1920 US Census shows her working as a milliner in a Dock Store at the age of 24. By 1930, US Census records show her married to Ted J. Treece, a furniture store proprietor, and living in Grand Junction, Colorado with their two children. The 1930 US Census lists her as a homemaker, and the 1940 Census as a music teacher. She was instrumental in bringing the community concert series to Grand Junction, although Walter Walker had run a similar concert series prior to her efforts. She brought many well-known musicians to the area, including Roland Hayes and Bruce Yarnell. She also taught a student choral troop for Mesa College and traveled around with them in Colorado and Utah. She directed many area choirs, including church choirs, the Elks and Shriners choirs, and a choir at one of the CCC camps. She gave private singing lessons and judged music contests. She died at the age of 101, and is buried in Grand Junction.
