Packy Walker
Douglas “Packy” Walker was born 16 May 1945 in Pulaski, New York. During his youth, Walker involved in scouting (he reports he liked the uniforms) and the Pulaski Junior Road Eagles. He was captain of his high school track and football teams and held the school record in the 440 for fifteen years. After high school, Walker worked as a lifeguard on Lake Ontario and as an assistant operator of a hydroelectric plant in upstate New York. In 1967, Walker migrated to Vail. Despite Vail’s very small population, Walker found there were two other men named Doug Walker. He reported that one Doug Walker was a ski instructor and worked for Gorsuch’s and the other Doug Walker received his grandmother’s cookies in the mail. Walker received his nickname, “Packy,” from Ralph Sloan during the early Vail era. During his years in Vail, Walker worked closely with Bob Lazier. Walker managed two properties for Lazier: The Tivoli for three years and many subsequent years at The Lifthouse in Lionshead. Walker also worked with Lazier and Barry Clifford as “a jester and a diver” during the successful ocean search for the Whydah Gally. The Whydah was caught in a severe storm off Cape Cod in 1717 and had eluded searchers until 1984. Walker and Lazier were also partners in an Alma, Colorado gold mine venture and Walker was an early part-owner of Purcell’s restaurant in Vail. The creative antics and practical jokes of Packy Walker are legendary. They often involved Dave Garton and Chuck McLaughlin as partners. Although at times notorious, Walker’s embodiment as the archetypal Trickster has endeared him to many – including President Gerald and Betty Ford. The puppies of Walker’s beloved Bart, his golden retriever, were adopted by some of President Gerald Ford’s friends including Pearl Bailey, Clint Eastwood, Nelson Rockefeller and Alan Greenspan. Bart’s famous name lives on the favorite local’s restaurant, Bart n’ Yeti’s. After meeting at Garton’s Saloon where she was employed, Packy Walker married the love of his life, Mary Lawrence. They reside in Vail’s Potato Patch neighborhood and in Florida.
