Phyllis Smith

Phyllis Smith was an English teacher and regional historian of Colorado and Montana. She published eight books and contributed to many articles in her lifetime, many of which studied coal mining, agricultural, and environmental history. She wrote three books on Colorado history: A Look at Boulder: From Settlement to City; Once a Coal Miner: The Story of Colorado's Northern Coal Field; and Weather Pioneers: The Signal Corps Station at Pikes Peak.

An African-American from Oklahoma who settled in Grand Junction, Colorado in the early Twentieth century. He worked as a car washer and was a member of the Handy Chapel.
According to Bill Callahan, whose family owned Callahan Mortuary, Albert refused to wash the hearses that the business brought to the car wash. He wore large boots reputed to be his “bootleg” boots.
