Rob LeVine - Oral History

Rob LeVine examines his life in Vail and his role in the evolution of the community. LeVine discusses meeting Dr. Tom Steinberg at The Clinic in the 1960s and later serving with him on Vail Town Council. LeVine expounds upon key decisions by the Vail Town Council that dramatically influenced the character of the community. LeVine also considers the existence of a Lionshead culture, being mentored by his father and Bud Benedict, and his role in the establishment of Bravo! Vail.
During the 1970s, LeVine caddied for President Ford and PGA great, Lee Elder. He later enjoyed the graciousness of LPGA number 1 player, Lorena Ochoa of Mexico, when she was a guest at the Antlers at Vail. LeVine also reflects on a deep powder/hidden tree stump telemarking mishap that nearly cost him his life. He details the efforts of friends and the Vail Ski Patrol legends who rescued him, as well as the skill of Dr. John Gottlieb and the Vail Orthopedic surgeons who ultimately saved him., Longtime local, Rob LeVine, is interviewed by Tony Mauro, the "Voice of Vail," and Tara Flanagan, former journalist with The Vail Trail.

A Rotary Club tradition is the gift (or exchange) of banners with visiting Rotarians.
This image depicts the original design of the Vail Rotary Club banner. According to Vail Rotary Club founding member, Bill Wilto, the motif was altered to its current design during the presidency of Tom Davies in 1988 – 1989.
Found in the digital archives of the Digital Public Library of America, this banner is held in the Herman Blizzard Rotary Archive, William M. Randall Library Special Collections of the University of North Carolina – Wilmington. Its only provenance is that it was contributed by the Wilmington Rotary Club, which is the oldest Rotary Club in North Carolina.

Shirley Welch was the 2009 recipient of the Nimon-Walker Award for outstanding contributions to the history of Eagle County, Colorado. The award is conferred by the Eagle County Historical Society.

Shirley Welch and Don Welch - Oral History

Shirley Welch is an Eagle County historian and local history author. Her husband, Don Welch, was an Eagle County Commissioner from 1985 to 1993; he was instrumental in the establishment of the High Altitude Aviation Training Site (HAATS) at the Eagle County Regional Airport.
