Bill and Sally Hanlon discuss their lives in early Vail, Eagle County, Colorado. Sally Hanlon examines her role, alongside the collaborative efforts of fellow Vail Trailblazer Josef Staufer, in establishing Red Sandstone Elementary School. Hanlon and Staufer worked with Ernie Chavez, the Eagle County School Board president and longtime postmaster in Vail, to organize the elementary school for Vail, Minturn and Red Cliff. Bill and Sally Hanlon also discuss their service on the Vail Mountain School board for over twenty-two years.
Bill Hanlon discusses the establishment of Vail Interfaith Chapel, the Jerry Ford Invitational Golf Tournament, and the Hanlon children teaching in the Blind Skier Program. Hanlon also addresses the early days of the Courtesy Patrol, a forerunner to today's professional Ski Patrol. Additionally, Hanlon notes Sarge Brown’s professional coordination of a 1960s Jr. Olympics trial and his brilliant management of Vail Ski Mountain.
Bill and Sally Hanlon humorously expound on the evolution of their Nu Gnu exclusive nightclub into a raucous rock-n-roll bar, inadvertently setting off the new Marriott’s fire alarm with fondue cuisine during the Hospital Family Dinner Dance, Drs. Eck and Bevan patching up locals during the brief, yet colorful, Friday Night Fights event at Dobson Ice Arena, and Rev. Don Simonton slipping on the icy steps of the new Chapel. Rev. Simonton apparently broke his leg during the mishap, had his leg set at Vail's new clinic by Dr. Tom Steinberg, and returned in an hour to perform one of the first weddings in Vail.
