Betty Ford at Vail Public Library: Book Signing - no. 8
Description
Former First Lady Betty Ford is featured in this series of eight images captured at Vail Public Library (VPL).
In 1987, Mrs. Ford accepted a VPL book signing invitation for her autobiographical effort, Betty: A Glad Awakening. VPL Reference Librarian Dean Willms issued the invitation through Mrs. Ford’s personal secretary and the event was held on 11 March 1987. Mrs. Ford effectively removed the stigma of addiction and alcoholism with this seminal publication.
Charlyn Costello Canada was the VPL Director of Library Services during Betty’s Ford’s 1987 book signing. Jane Hart, owner of The Cheese Shop in Vail and wife of District Court Judge Richard Hart, hosted a lovely tea service break for Mrs. Ford. Alongside Mrs. Ford in this series of images is Mary Catherine Moser; Moser assisted Mrs. Ford throughout the event. Verbatim Booksellers underwrote many of the expenses. The Vail Trail covered the story. In 1983, Mrs. Ford also attended the opening ceremony of Vail Public Library., This image is no. 8 of 8.
