Race and Ethnicity Terms for XML Forms

IMPORTANT: Only describe a person's race and or ethnicity when you can confirm that the person self-identified as part of that group. Do not under any circumstances assign a category without confirmation or "guess" based on images or other information. Multiple choices can be designated and you can enter terms not listed there. American Indian or Alaska Native

A person having origins in any of the original peoples of North and South America (including Central America) and who maintains tribal affiliation or community attachment. Can be referred to as Native North American People and also Indigenous Peoples, especially related to Alaskan groups. Referred to as First Nations People in Canada; Aboriginal Peoples in Australia. Be cautious using tribal names unless self-identified (i.e. Navajo / Dine’e).

Asian

A person having origins in any of the original peoples of the Far East, Southeast Asia, or the Indian subcontinent, including, for example, Cambodia, China, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippine Islands, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Black or African American

A person having origins in any of the black racial groups of Africa.

Hispanic or Latino or of Spanish Origin of any race

A person of Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, South or Central American, or other Spanish Culture or origin regardless of race. There can be issues when using this terminology to refer to Basque people.

Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander

A person having origins in any of the original peoples of Hawaii, Guam, Samoa, or other Pacific Islands.

White

A person having origins in any of the original peoples of Europe, the Middle East, or North Africa.
