Artist in Residence: Caleb Ferganchick
Caleb Ferganchick served as the nineteenth Mesa County Libraries Artist in Residence at 970West Studio. The dates of his residency were August 22-November 28, 2022. During the residency, he kept open studio hours at 970West on Tuesdays from 4 pm to 6 pm, allowing him to showcase his work with poetry and his creative process for Mesa County residents. He also gave three public, educational programs: Neighbors Night, I Spy List Poems (Families Welcome) (Thursday, September 1, 6:30 p.m.), Central Library Mesa Room Event description: Caleb will introduce children and their families to poetry and poetic devices, read a selection of children’s poetry, and lead participants in exploring the library to create a collaborative list poem that everyone can take home. Memory for the Main Stage (Tuesday, October 11 from 5:30-6:30), Fruita Branch Library Event description: Utilizing training from the World Memory Championships and FBI Language Specialists, as well as the common experience of singing in the shower and car, Caleb will lead participants in three exercises to quickly memorize poetic material for oral delivery. Participants should bring a poem they have written or a poem they enjoy and want to memorize that takes them 1 minute to recite while reading from the text. Artist in Residence: Devan (Penniman) Knapp
Devan Knapp, then Devan Penniman, served as the tenth Mesa County Libraries Artist in Residence at 970West Studio. The dates of her residency were May 6 - August 12, 2019. During the residency, she kept open studio hours at 970West on Tuesdays from 4 pm to 6 pm, allowing her to showcase her work with letterpress, book and paper arts, and her creative process for Mesa County residents. She also gave twelve public, educational programs: Introduction to Paper Marbling (same class offered twice: Thursday, May 16, 2019, 6 pm and Thursday, June 6, 2019, 6 pm), Mesa Community Room (first class) and Monument Community Room (second class) Event description: By using the almost foolproof Japanese marbling method of Suminagashi, you will get a hands-on crash course in the basics of marbling paper. Marbled paper can be used as wrapping paper, stationary, greeting cards, and much more. Using a simple water bath and colorful inks, we will create and manipulate beautiful, unique patterns on paper for you to take home. Supplies are provided. This class is geared toward adults. Intro to Letterpress Printing (same class offered twice: Thursday, May 23, 2019, 6 p.m. and Thursday, June 13, 2019, 6 pm), Monument Community Room Event description: From the 15th century when the letterpress was first utilized, letterpress printing was a primary method for mass producing printed goods. Although largely replaced by computers, letterpress printing still exists today. This class will start with a quick history followed by the basics of setting type and letterpress printing. By the end of the class, you will be able to print and take home your own cards, poster, or stationary. Supplies are provided. This class is geared toward adults. Bookbinding (same class offered twice: Thursday, May 30, 2019, 6 pm and Thursday, June 20, 2019, 6 pm), Mesa Community Room Event description: Imagine being able to sketch or take notes in a book you made yourself. This class will touch on a few basic ways to bind books as well as a brief history. By learning how to fold, trim, and bind by using a few basic techniques, the end result will be a hand-bound book for you to take home. Supplies are provided. This class is geared toward adults. Central Library Kids Club -- Paper Marbling (Wednesday, July 31, 2019, 2 pm), Central Library Community Room Event description: Kids, learn how to make a marbled paper galaxy! Drop in anytime between 2-4 p.m. for this open-house style event. Clifton Branch Kids Club -- Paper Marbling (Wednesday, August 7, 2019, 2:30 pm), Clifton Branch Library Event description: Kids, learn how to make a marbled paper galaxy! Drop in anytime between 2:30-3:30 for this open-house style event. Paper Making (Adult class) (Friday, July 19, 2019, 2 pm), Fruita Branch Library Event description: Have you ever wanted to do something with your newspapers and other scrap paper that is lying around the house? Why not turn them into paper you can use again? In this class, you will learn the basics of paper making and how you can recycle your newspapers or scrap paper into new, handmade blank pages. By using supplies you can find around your house, and with just a few steps, we will create paper. Supplies are provided.
Artist in Residence: Emmi (Hall) Farris
Emmi Farris, then Emmi Hall, served as the third Mesa County Libraries Artist in Residence at 970West Studio. The dates of her residency were from January 9 - April 24, 2017. During the residency, she kept open studio hours at 970West from 9 am to Noon on Mondays, allowing her to showcase her art and creative process for Mesa County residents. Artist in Residence: Evan Curtis
Evan Curtis is an award-winning independent stop motion animator and filmmaker from the Adirondacks of NY. He received a BFA in Film from the Conservatory of Theatre Arts and Film at Purchase College and an MFA in Animation from the Savannah College of Art and Design. In the Fall of 2019, Evan moved to Grand Junction to join the Art & Design department at Colorado Mesa University Evan participated as the Artist in Residence at Mesa County Libraries from August 2020 to November 2020.
Artist in Residence: Jessica Scriver
As Mesa County Libraries 970West Studio Artist in Residence, Jessica Scriver created illustrations using an encaustic etching technique. The illustrations tell the story of a baby yak that is adopted by a new family and remembers her mother in the cycle of fiber production.
Artist in Residence: Jill Burkey
Jill Burkey served as the seventeenth Mesa County Libraries Artist in Residence at 970West Studio. The dates of her residency were January 10- April 18, 2022. During the residency, she kept open studio hours at 970West on Tuesdays from 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m, allowing her to showcase her poetry and creative process for Mesa County residents. She also gave three public, educational programs: Write Your Own Greeting Card (All Ages) (February 3, 2022, 6-7:30 p.m.) Event description: Have you ever wanted to make your own greeting card, with your OWN words? This is your chance! In this workshop, you will learn how to write two-line poems that you can use to make your own greeting cards for Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, a friend’s birthday, or just because. We’ll look at examples, play with words from our word bag, and have fun making and decorating our cards. No writing experience necessary. This workshop is for writers of all ages and either new or experienced writers. Color Poems (All Ages) (March 3, 6-7:30 p.m.) Event description: Are you passionate about orange? Or do you think blue is just the bee’s knees? In this poetry workshop, we will let our imaginations run wild as we learn how to write a poem using imagery, color, emotion, and the word bag. We’ll also get to play with art supplies and paper to create a beautiful backdrop that we can copy our finished poems onto. No writing experience necessary. This workshop is for writers of all ages and either new or experienced writers. Poetry Postcards — Celebrate National Poetry Month by Writing a Postcard Poem! (All Ages) (April 12, 6-7:30 p.m.) Event description: We all have postcards lying around that we haven’t used – dust them off, bring them with you, and learn how to write a postcard poem on them! Don’t have any postcards lying around? We’ve got you covered. Just bring yourself and a willingness to be creative. We’ll look at examples, play with words from our word bag, and have fun writing poems. No writing experience necessary. This workshop is for writers of all ages and either new or experienced writers.
Artist in Residence: Julia March Crocetto
Julia March Crocetto served as the ninth Mesa County Libraries Artist in Residence at 970West Studio. The dates of her residency were January 14 - April 22, 2019. During the residency, she kept open studio hours at 970West on Tuesdays from 2 pm to 4 pm, allowing her to showcase her quilt-making and creative process for Mesa County residents. She also gave six public, educational programs: Rust Printing (ALL ages Neighbors Read) (Thursday, January 24, 2019, 6:30-7:30 pm), Monument Community Room Event description: Found objects capture our attention with their textures, color, connections to history or personal memories. Rust printing enables us to record an object and incorporate it into our lives in more tangible ways. Rust can also be harvested and used as a pigment, with painterly potential. Join this informal workshop to learn how to make rust prints on cloth and explore possibilities for using rust printing in your hobbies or creative expression. Feel free to bring small objects for rusting or discussion. Materials will be provided. Eco Printing with Leaves (adult program) (Thursday, February 21, 2019, 6:00-7:30 pm), Mesa Community Room Event description: Have you ever picked up leaves to admire and collect, but then wondered what to do with them? “Eco-printing” gives the collector an opportunity to record the ephemeral beauty of leaves and other plant matter onto cloth using simple supplies and techniques. In this surface design sampler we will create botanical prints with eco-printing, direct printing, and stamping. Take home a silk scarf and samples on cotton that you can incorporate into your own creative endeavors. Materials will be provided. Block Printing (Teen Event) (Thursday, February 28, 2019, 4 pm), Fruita Branch Event description: Learn to block print with Artist in Residence Julia March Crocetto. Teens can carve and print a unique design onto fabric during this workshop. Supplies are included. Creative Mapping (adult program) (Tuesday, March 12, 2019, 6:00-7:30 pm), Monument Community Room Event description: Mapping is often associated with explorers and a careful tracing of what is known about a place. In this workshop, Julia will reveal some of her creative process: creative mapping provides an opportunity to chart unknown territory. Using watercolor paint and waterproof ink, we will utilize creative mapping to connect to place, recollections, and desires. Bring journal entries, poems, stories, and maps for reference material. These materials will not be physically incorporated into our maps, but will inspire layers of creativity. Ideas will be discussed for ways to enjoy your newly-created “map.” Materials provided; feel free to bring your own supplies. Creative Mending with Embroidery (Adult Event) (Tuesday, April 2, 2019, 3 pm), Fruita Branch Event description: Learn stitches and methods to create patches with creative flair using techniques from various cultures. Bring a pair of jeans or a shirt in need of repair. Creative Mending with Embroidery (adult and teen) (Tuesday, April 9, 2019, 6:00-7:30 pm), Mesa Community Room Event description: In this era of abundance and internet shopping, a quiet revolution has been unfolding. Mending has become an elevated craft, embraced as a fun, cheap, and practical way to fix damaged clothing, as well as a signal of intentional re-use, up-cycling, and a rejection of “disposable” low-quality clothing. Time-honored techniques of mending and decorative stitching from various cultures can be incorporated to create attractive, durable repairs. After a short slide program, learn some stitches and methods to create patches with your creative flair. If desired, bring a pair of jeans or shirt in need of repair.
Artist in Residence: Paula Marchionda
Paula Marchionda served as the eleventh Mesa County Libraries Artist in Residence at 970West Studio. The dates of her residency were August 26 - December 2, 2019. During the residency, she kept open studio hours at 970West on Tuesdays from 4 pm to 6 pm, allowing her to showcase her work with glass art and her creative process for Mesa County residents. She also gave five public, educational programs: Artist Talk- All About the Art of Glass Fusing (September 5, 2019, 6:00-7 pm), Mesa Room Event Description: All ages no limit. Fused glass artist, Paula Marchionda, will teach about the science and techniques behind the art of glass fusing. Recycle That Bottle! (Thursday, September 26, 2019) Event Description: Adult. Registration required. Limit 8. During this program, Paula will teach the process of creating a fused glass dish using a broken wine bottle, slump mold, and kiln. Bring your own empty and clean wine bottle or use one provided. Please note that finished dishes can be picked up at a later date to allow for the firing process. Supplies included and registration is required. Recycled Glass Snowflakes (same class offered twice: Tuesday, October 8, 2019 at 6 pm in Clifton, October 22 at 3 pm in Fruita) Event Description: Supplies included. Registration required. Using reclaimed glass from windows, participants will each create a fused glass snowflake ornament. Please note that finished ornaments can be picked up at a later date to allow for the firing process. TEEN program: Glass Pendant Making (November 15, 2019, 4 pm), Central Teen area Event Description: Make a fused glass pendant from dichroic glass. Fused pendants can be picked up at a later date to allow for the firing process. Supplies included. No registration (Limited to the first 15 or so teens)
Artist in Residence: Pavia Justinian
Pavia Justinian served as the eighth Mesa County Libraries Artist in Residence at 970West Studio. The dates of her residency were August 20 - December 3, 2018. Rachel Campbell-Osborne served as the fifteenth Mesa County Libraries Artist in Residence at 970West Studio. The dates of her residency were May 24 - August 30, 2021. Artist in Residence: Rebecca Woods
Rebecca Woods served as the fourteenth Mesa County Libraries Artist in Residence at the 970West Studio. The dates of her residency were February 1 - May 3, 2021. During the residency, she kept virtual open studio hours via Zoom on Wednesdays from 3-5 pm, allowing her to showcase her art and creative process for Mesa County residents (all studio hours and programs were virtual due to the covid-19 pandemic). She also gave three public, online educational programs: Papercraft Figures (February 24 at 6 pm (recorded)) Description: “Paper dolls” may bring to mind images of punch-out cards with a variety of clothes, but that isn’t the only type of figure you can make with paper and your imagination. Make papercraft figures that you can dress, decorate, or even use as puppets in your own puppet show. Pick up a kit ahead of time to follow along then, join Rebecca via Zoom after the video premiere.
