A History of Chaffee County Schools: 1860 - 1986
A History of Chaffee County Schools, 1860-1986, was researched and organized by the Chaffee County Extension Homemaker Council. The history includes schools in Lake County, which encompassed what is now Chaffee County, prior to 1880. It includes the school districts of Granite, Centerville, Poncha Springs, Maysville, Adobe Park, Free Gold, Salida, Alpine, Buena Vista, Garfield, Riverside, St. Elmo, Nathrop, Pinion Grove, Vicksburg, Pine Creek, Hancock, Turret, Heywood Springs, Gas Creek, Monarch, Cleora, Newitt, Sand Park, Clear Creek, Mt. Princeton (Maxwell Park), Berrian/Wild Horse, Cleora/Wellsville, Valley View, and Browns Creek.
Bob Pierce Collection
These images are from the Bob Pierce Photo Collection. Bob worked for the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad for nearly 48 years as a supervisory agent, stationed at the railroad offices in Salida, Colorado.
Bob Rush Collection
Bob Rush, prominent Salida attorney, had a large collection of framed photographs that adorned his office. He graciously donated his collection to the Salida Library.
Donna Nevens Collection
This collection has various history of Salida and the surrounding area, specifically the mining areas of Monarch.
Hermit of Arbor Villa Collection
Frank Gimlett, aka The Hermit of Arbor Villa, abandoned his life in the big city of Salida, Colorado, and moved back into the mountains to pan for gold and sell postcards to the tourists.

This collection includes images from all the collections in the Salida Archive.
Marge Large Collection
Marjorie Large was born and grew up in Denver, Colorado. She served in the Marine Corps from 1956 to 1959 where her job was processing field reconnaissance photographs. These two panoramic photos were donated after Marge's death. The photo of Camp Kearny's 115th Engineer's Train is personal; her grandfather is among the men in the company.
Patricia Bradbury Holton Collection
Photographs in this collection are of the town of Granite and surrounding area and date from 1880 to 1900. The Galvin and Bradbury families settled in Granite and worked in the local mines during this time. These photographs were graciously donated by the Holton family in memory of Patrica Bradbury Holton.
Remembering Salida
The Salida Oral History Project preserved the history and heritage of Salida through interviews of long-time residents and other knowledgeable people who lived and worked in the area. These are shared stories of their childhood, schooling, family, church, outings, celebrations, friends, hobbies, and events that still live in their memories. The interviews will be kept forever so that others can learn from these true historians’ words.
Salida Centennial Photo Collection
Salida, Colorado celebrated its centennial in 1980. The Salida Centennial Committee compiled this collection of old photographs to help preserve the history of Salida and the surrounding areas.
