Alice "Widge" Ferguson is depicted holding a Widge's Ridge sign while standing behind her family's ski retreat at the Edelweiss in Vail. Widge's Ridge is located in Sun Down Bowl on Vail Mountain. Widge's Ridge was named for Widge Ferguson by Vail pioneer and first public relations director, Bob Parker. Ferguson became locally renowned for bringing snow to Vail when she came skiing. Alice "Widge" Ferguson poses with her original, customized wooden skis and beartrap bindings behind the Edelweiss in Vail Village. Widge's first skis were fitted with metal edges by her aeronautical engineer father, Andrew Willgoos. Although metal edging was eventually popularized by Howard Head, Willgoos may have pioneered this innovation. After Head learned that Widge Ferguson was Willgoos' daughter, Head expressed great admiration for her father's creativity and ingenuity. Mikaela Shiffrin - Record Breaking Day 19 March 2023
On 19 March 2023, Mikaela Shiffrin, an Edwards, Colorado native, celebrated FIS Alpine Ski World Cup wins in slalom, giant slalom and the overall title. The events took place on the final day of the 2022/2023 season and were held in Soldeu, a Pyrenean ski village located in the principality of Andorra. These World Cup wins hallmarked Shiffrin's 88th World Cup win and a world record regardless of gender. Sweden's skiing icon, the great Ingemar Stenmark, formerly held this honor with 86 World Cup wins. At this same World Cup event, Shiffrin earned her 21st giant slalom win, which chronicled a women's world record formerly held by Vreni Schneider, and Shiffrin's 138th World Cup podium, which marked a women's world record formerly held by USA teammate Lindsay Vonn. Moose & Calf at Vail Public Library: Mary McDougall Photo
This image of a shiras moose (Alces alces shirasi) and calf was captured by VPL staff member, Mary McDougall. Observed browsing on wild rose (Rosa woodsii syn. R. blanda), the moose cow was enjoying the greenscape between Vail Public Library and Gore Creek. Early that morning, this same moose was observed browsing on river birch (Betula occidentalis) leaf and twig. During this interlude, McDougall turned a corner and experienced a too-close-for-comfort greeting of this wary moose mother.

This photograph of a young bull shiras moose (Alces alces shirasi) was captured by Vail Public Library Senior Librarian, Jo Norris. Observed browsing on red osier dogwood (Cornus sericea) leaf and twig, the moose enjoyed the native plant landscaping between Vail Public Library (VPL) and Gore Creek for much of the afternoon.
